Platform Accountability Overview

Platform Accountability

Platform accountability is evaluating how a platform (I.e., Spotify, Facebook) demonstrates “appropriate behavior” whether data privacy, cybersecurity, algorithmic transparency, or protection of children. Legislation and policy have to be carefully constructed to monitor and regulate responsible industry behavior that balances innovation, safety, and ethical concerns. However, the complexities surrounding these regulations must be carefully developed to be both practical and consider stakeholder perspectives.

Spotify & AI in the UK & EU

This project is sponsored by the Laidlaw Scholars Program under the Hart Leadership Program at Duke. The project is a case study on Spotify and proposed policy solutions in the United Kingdom and European Union at the intersection of AI and music streaming with a specific focus on impact on democracy, artist's renumeration, and transparency.

AI & Music Streaming in the US

This project is a part of Duke Bass Connections. The Spring 2025 cohort focused research on four key subtopics: 1) intellectual property, 2) copyright, 3) personal data use and privacy, and 4) children's safety. The team published a white paper, infographics, and blog posts focused on US policy solutions.
